The Narcissus Myth and Soulmate Mystery

This week I am talking about Soulmates and The Narcissus Myth, and not in the same breath. Being that Valentines day is this weekend, it felt appropriate to talk about our quest for the soulmate and also our fear of losing someone we feel is a soulmate. Hopefully this article will shed some light.

I am really looking forward to my interview next Tuesday with Psychologist Ernie Vecchio. I met Ernie when he approached me about having his own radio show on Sedona Talk Radio. When we talked on the phone we seemed like two kids in a candy store sharing our love for psychology, mythology and spirituality. After talking to Ernie I asked him if he would be willing to be a guest on my show and fortunately he agreed. He volunteered to talk about The Narcissus Myth which I find quite exciting. Most who have studied narcissism know about the myth of the boy Narcissus. But we don't necessarily know the meaning and messages behind the myth and the hope it offers for humanity. Ernie also contributed a wonderful article to NarcissismFree.com on The Narcissus Myth.

I often get people write me a bit irritated that they are receiving my newsletter which once a welcome support for their pain stemming from narcissistic abuse is now a painful reminder of what they are trying to leave behind. I understand because I've been there. But there are a few things I want to say to you who are moving on. Although I offer an abundance of information and products on recovering from narcissistic abuse, my lifes work is truly about recovering the self. This is a journey that goes far beyond our experiences with narcissism. In fact it is the narcissistic abuse that leads us to the discovery of ourselves; those parts of ourselves that have been hiding in the shadows, wanting to come into the light. So although we want to move beyond a focus on narcissism, we will forever be working on understanding who we are.

Ironically when Ernie Vecchio talks about the Narcissus Myth he talks about how Narcissus is really about a boy who was on a qwest to know thyself and to know God. I've mentioned in previous writings how I felt narcissistic abuse can be a catalyst for transformation because it reaches so deep into the core of who we are and triggers all our fears, our pain and our deep seated sense of worthlessness and inadequacy.

Narcissism is a pattern of traits and behaviors which signify infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of all others and the egotistic and ruthless pursuit of one's gratification, dominance and ambition. As a character disorder, the prognosis for change is poor. However, as an element of the culture and human condition knowing the myth offers hope.

In this tale, told by Roman poet Ovid and remembered for his verses on love, a young girl named Echo falls in love with a vain youth named Narcissus. He was the son of a woman that the river god had encircled with the windings of his streams, thus trapping and seducing her. Worried for her son’s welfare, she consulted a prophet regarding his future. The prophet reports: Narcissus "will live to a ripe old age, as long as he never knows himself."

Finding A Soulmate Doesn't Necessarily Equal A Blissful Relationship

As we are approaching Valentines Day I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the topic of soulmates.

There is a lot of information out there on soulmates and much of it is conflicting, as in any subject. It is difficult to have a solid understanding that can serve us when we attempt to know what these heartfelt connections in our lives mean.

The fairy tale version is that there is that one special someone out there who is made just for you and when you find him/her your life will finally be complete. Your expectation is that when you meet your soulmate that life will go smoothly; you will be head over heels in love and support each other completely in your quest for a greater life. It is the type of love story movies are made about. It is why we love romantic comedies so much. It is why we love fairytales.
